7 Healthy Hot Drinks - Heart News
Enjoying a hot drink can be a great way to relax, as long as you avoid those that are full of sugar and fat. Rosalie Starling suggests eight healthy heart options.
1. Fresh ginger tea
Warm, spicy ginger tea has a long history of being used for stomach pain and nausea. To make it fresh, grate or cut a small piece of peeled ginger root. Pour boiling water over it and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can buy tebags at most supermarkets.
2. Fruit tea
If you like something fruity, sweet fruit tea is a great way to have low calorie. There are plenty of different tea bags and loose tea mixes available. Check the labels and choose one that is sugar-free. Also avoid liquor that contains alcohol, which can increase your blood pressure.
3. Fresh mint tea
Mint tea is low in calories, is a good oral cleanser and has been traditionally used to aid digestion. Wash and peel the mint leaves, place in a small saucepan and fill with boiling water. Avoid Moroccan mint tea in restaurants, as it can be loaded with sugar.
4. Hot chocolate
A small hot chocolate from a high street coffee shop can contain about five teaspoons (20g) of sugar. These extra calories can cause obesity, which increases the risk of heart disease. When made with saturated fat milk and whipped cream, this will add extra calories, and will contain saturated fat, which may affect your cholesterol levels. For a healthy version, mix sugar-free coconut powder with low-fat hot milk and low-calorie sugar, if needed.
5. Coffee
Coffee in moderation is fine, but a large latte made with whole milk can
contain nearly 300 calories. If milky coffees are your thing, go for a
smaller size and choose a ‘skinny’ version with low-fat milk to cut back
on calories and saturated fat. Avoid flavoured drinks, such as vanilla
or gingerbread lattes, which often contain sugary syrup. Want a little
extra flavour? Sprinkle ground cinnamon on your cappuccino for sweetness
without the extra calories.
6. Hot lemon
Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a bowl, add an extra slice of lemon, and fill with boiling water. Hot water and lemons do the opposite of sugary drinks such as lemonade, but try to eat them as the acids in lemon juice can damage teeth.
7. Green tea
Its health benefits are often exaggerated, and it contains caffeine (made from the same plant as black tea). But green tea is still a healthier option than sugary drinks and high fat. Matcha lattes currently, made with raw powdered tea and milk, usually contain hidden sugar. Make your own latte with hot low-fat hot milk mixed with matcha powder. Add a low-calorie sweetener, if needed.
